Join the Bloomsbury Quartet for a low stimulus performance as part of Wigmore Hall's Imagine Series. The ensemble will perform a programme without sudden or loud volume in this informal concert, featuring pieces by Rebecca Clarke and Arvo Pärt.

The concert will benefit from natural daylight through Wigmore Hall’s frosted glass ceiling, and all other lighting in the auditorium itself will be kept low. Announcements will be kept to a minimum and there will be a quiet space in the Bechstein Room. Audiences may leave and re-enter when needed. Hand dryers in the toilets will be switched off and paper towels available instead.

Low stimulus performances may benefit those who prefer a quieter environment and some neurodivergent people.

As a former Wigmore Hall/Open Academy Fellowship Ensemble, the Bloomsbury Quartet is passionate about engaging audiences with thought-provoking programmes. Here the group presents a unique ‘concert experience’ that combines performance ‘in the round’ with a multimedia exhibition on the life and works of one of the finest composers the British Isles have ever produced: Dame Elizabeth Violet Maconchy LeFanu (1907-1994).

Bookended by an early and late string quartet, the concert also features music by Maconchy’s teacher Ralph Vaughan Williams, daughter Nicola LeFanu, and Leoš Janáček, a key influence during the composer’s later studies in Prague.

Following the great success of 2019’s inaugural ‘pay-as-you-wish’ concert, the Petworth Festival invites you to join us for another concert featuring music that is all too often under- represented – in this instance music by two superb female composers, Dame Elizabeth Maconchy DBE and her equally luminous daughter, Nicola Lefanu.

The Bloomsbury Quartet – which excelled at a previous Petworth Festival when a Royal Academy of Music ensemble – brings Elizabeth Maconchy’s life and music into focus. The programme also includes music by Nicola Lefanu and by Maconchy’s teacher, Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

This wholly innovative evening is in two parts and mixes the music with a multimedia installation to help familiarise the audience with the programme and the players: a mixture of film, photography and ‘live’ programme notes.

Fresh from its year with us as our Wigmore Learning Fellowship Ensemble 2018/19, the quartet explores exciting works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Each of the members are passionate about connecting with people though music, and their performances have been described as 'forward thinking with big ideas' and 'magnificently assured and stylish'.

Women of Faith Chapel Vigil

As an all-female quartet and the Ensemble-in-Residence, the Bloomsbury Quartet is proud to perform music composed by women, interspersed with readings.

Join Joshua Dowling, the Bloomsbury Quartet and friends for an album launch event exploring the concept ‘Sounds of Architecture’. This concert features works for strings and electronics composed by Dowling that take inspiration from the 21st century architectural style ‘Parametricism’. By taking inspiration from this style coined by architect and architectural-theorist Patrik Schumacher (who is now principal of Zaha Hadid Architects) Dowling is doing what many artists have done before him: translating aspects of a new genre from one contemporary field to another. He believes that parametric design principles put forward in Schumacher's manifesto are dying to be applied to other areas including music and would benefit contemporary society.

One such work that Joshua produced is named after the cultural centre 'Heydar Aliyev Centre' situated in Baku, Azerbaijan and designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The architecture's fluid form is a continuous surface which connects the various cultural spaces of the centre while giving each its own individual identity. This aspect of the architecture is reflected in the composition for chamber orchestra as the instrumental sections are separated into six zones of intensity. Each instrumental section is further subdivided giving each musician a slightly different part to play. Collectively the performers emphasise the flowing, curved style which makes this architecture so distinctive. This particular piece was workshopped on the CoMA 2020 Midwinter String Composition Course, recorded professionally by the Northern Film Orchestra and an arrangment will be performed at the album launch event by the Bloomsbury Quartet and friends.

The acclaimed Bloomsbury Quartet presents a diverse and exciting programme, including a work composed especially for the quartet by Coventry-based composer Daniel Fardon. The world premiere was performed at Wigmore Hall in July 2019, as the culmination of both the quartet’s year-long Fellowship and Fardon’s time as Apprentice Composer.

This concert will be presented by Luke Newby, 2018-19 Wigmore Hall Trainee Music Leader, as part of Wigmore’s Music for Life Residency.

Formed in 2017, Eva de Vries, Rachel Maxey, Felicity Smith, and Janell Yeo are The Bloomsbury Quartet. Winners of the 2018 Stroud Green Festival Ensemble Scheme, they are on their first UK tour with ReCentred, which aims to bring women composers into the centre of their own narrative. This performance experience explores the life and music of the prolific string quartet composer Dame Elizabeth Maconchy DBE, putting the composer in a wider context. The programme will encompass the breadth of Maconchy’s repertoire which spans over 50 years, including Quartet no.1 and Quartet no.11. Alongside these are works by her teacher Ralph Vaughan Williams and her daughter Nicola LeFanu.

The evening will commence at 7 pm with a ‘first half’ multimedia installation during which audience members are encouraged to freely move around the space and interact with players from the quartet. This helps to familiarise the audience with the programme and the players and uses a mixture of film, photography, programme notes and live extracts displayed around the Abbey performance space. Refreshments will be available throughout this segment ahead of the ‘second half’ concert performance.

DANCES

This relaxed concert is open to everyone and provides a special opportunity to hear a live performance in an informal environment. Enjoy an hour’s music performed by the Bloomsbury Quartet, the Royal Academy of Music/Wigmore Hall Fellowship Ensemble for 2018/19.

There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement, and house lights will remain up. Audience members are welcome to move in and out of the auditorium as they need to, and there is a designated quiet area.
